A Sense of Community

This past weekend, my editor sent me to Mac's Pond in Manasquan to get video of yet another fishing tournament. At first I thought, what's the big deal? We've been seeing fishing tournaments and demonstrations in many of the local towns for the past month or so. What I didn't realize was that this was the 39th Annual Mac's Pond Jr. Fishing Tournament and the folks in these parts take it pretty seriously.

I don't know about you, but I can't think of too many local events that have been going on for 39 years in a row. I mean, there are of course our national holidays, Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day, etc. and religious holidays which have been going on for thousands of years, but this event got me wondering how many wonderful small towns in our country have been celebrating something annually for decades?

Have you ever been to a unique community event? Tell me about it! I want to know about the corn-huskers association annual carnival or the lake-whatever-it's-called annual boat outing. If you know of any obscure, yet all-important events held by communities anywhere in the USA, comment here and share.

seems like a lot of local events in this area are traditional. my favorites are brielle day and the manasquan fireman's fair!
